Denali Quarters Sets, Harrison Gold Coins Start December Sales

The U.S. Mint is introducing three collector products to start December sales. Denali National Park and Preserve Quarters appear in a three-coin set, soon to be followed by two First Spouse Gold Coins commemorating Caroline Harrison.

Gold futures are solidly lower in early trade on Tuesday, hitting a fresh four-week low below the psychologically and technically important $1,700 per troy ounce level at $1,698.50 per troy ounce for the February contract. The spot price of gold is also down, by $13.50, to $1,703.00 per troy ounce.

Today, Tuesday, December 4, the 2012 Denali National Park and Preserve Quarters Three-Coin Set is being made available by the U.S. Mint, one of the coins included being a proof version of the Denali quarter struck at the U.S. Mint in San Francisco. The Set also includes two collector quality uncirculated versions from the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. Past demand for America the Beautiful Quarters Three-Coin Sets indicate initial sales will be high.

On Thursday, December 6, the Mint will make Caroline Harrison First Spouse Gold Coins available with examples in proof and uncirculated qualities. These are 24-karat strikes with current prices running $1,016.00 for uncirculated spousal coins to $1,029.00 for proofs in the one-half ounce-sized coins.

The U.S. Mint is set to release several products before year-end, capping off what has proven to be an intense selling season. Sales levels for U.S. Mint products in November hit multi-year record highs. November sales of American Eagle Gold Coins reached 136,500 ounces, a 131.4 percent increase over sales in October and a 232.9 percent increase above last year’s sales levels for the same time period.

Year-to-date, the sales figures for American Eagle Gold Coins stand at 677,000 ounces, still the weakest period since the safe-haven demand for bullion coins began its ascent in 2008 following the financial crisis. January through November sales totaled 684,500 ounces in 2008, surging to 1,193,500 in 2009, 1,160,500 ounces in 2010, and 934,500 ounces in 2011.

Other products set to be released by the U.S. Mint include the 2012 Benjamin Harrison Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set, the Grover Cleveland (2nd term) Presidential $1 Coin Cover, and the Frances Cleveland (2nd term) First Spouse Gold Proof and Uncirculated Coins.
