The Australian Kangaroo, father of the jumbo coins
The Australian Kangaroo is Australia’s standard gold bullion coin. Although created to contain one ounce of .9999 fine gold, the series also introduced the concept of “jumbo” coins with the first one-kilogram gold bullion coin in regular production.
Kangaroos followed the Gold Nugget series, which were introduced in 1986 and named after the image of the 2,284-oz. Welcome Stranger nugget on the reverse. Discovered in 1869, in Western Australia, the Welcome Stranger is the largest gold nugget ever found.
The kangaroo first took the nugget’s place on the reverse in 1990, but until 2008, the word “nugget” shared the obverse with the Queen’s portrait. Because of this, earlier Kangaroos were often called “Kangaroo–Nuggets,” though that term is now uncommon.
The frosted design of the Kangaroo creates a unique and stunning two-tone effect, and because each year features a new image of a kangaroo, Gold Australian Kangaroos are extremely popular for series type sets.
