$20.00 Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle — legacy of the gold rush.

Congress authorized the first Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle in the spring of 1849 in response to demand from the gold fields of California, where sudden riches and high demand for scarce supplies had fostered rampant inflation.
The first year of mintage of the Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle is often stated as 1849 because several pattern pieces were produced in that year, but the first coins intended for circulation were not struck until the following year.
Liberty Head Gold Double Eagles are grouped into three general types:
• Type I, commonly called “No Motto,” were minted between 1849 and 1866, and bore the abbreviated denomination, “TWENTY D.”
• Type II, minted between 1867 and 1876, added the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” on the reverse above the eagle, and also bore the abbreviated denomination.
• Type III, minted between 1877 and 1907, bore the motto and the full denomination, “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
Approval for the Double Eagle was conditional for two years — if the denomination proved to be unpopular, mintage would cease. Mintage of the Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle and its successor went on uninterrupted for eighty-four years.
